HABITAT A maritime gull, many disperse widely across Atlantic in winter. Nests colonially on cliff ledges, occasionally on buildings on W and N coasts.

NEST Guano, mud and seaweed glued to sheer cliff, often under overhang.

VOICE Noisy at colonies, diagnostic kitti-wake.

GENERAL Widespread, locally numerous.

ADULT Medium (27 cm), but small and dainty for a gull. Watch for jet black cap, short dark red bill and legs. In flight shows pale grey upperside to wings, note dark grey underside and rounded white tips. In winter, loses black hood, has dark spot behind eye. Sexes similar.
